How It Works

Members with house share during the first two years.  This will be the “Intensive Savings Period”, they key aspect during this time.  Here’s how it works: Room, Board, Utilities and possibly staple foods will be provided to each member in exchange for four hours of work per week.  Each participant must agree to saving a set amount each month, put away to later be combined with the other members savings.  This amount may differ depending on each persons income and other expenses.  However, the more each person can save, the easier it will be to realize the goal of purchasing land and building materials without taking out a loan and having mortgage payments to fruition.

Glastonbury CT Site is near a 14 acre lake, the Blue Dot and many other trails. There are about 30 families in the Diamond Lake Watershed area. The Area is almost surrounded by State Forest. and State Parks.

Glastonbury has five bedrooms, two of which can be shared by couples or friends, three bathrooms, two spacious living areas with fireplace and woodstoves, as well as an indoor and outdoor dining area.  There is a small amount of space for gardens which can be re-assessed and possibly made bigger.

Members have the ability to get a head start on their life plan by getting a home with out a loan. Having this large financial burden removed allows members to follow an alternative to the standard Job.  Sponsors have the chance to aid in the development of a cadre of talented professionals in the areas of Peace, Justice and Environment. We are looking for people who can articulate their ideas or plans for how they would like to positively impact the community or society.  Honest, hard working, and tolerant, are all traits the selection committee will evaluate.

 We are looking to fill about a dozen spots, each member can receive their own bedroom, couples and children are also welcome as space is available. Opportunities will exist for members to join the process as the EcoVillage is being developed. Some may purchase land and others may choose to have a weather tight structure build and they will complete the interior living space. All homes will be standard stick built with high efficiency standards.

 The Glastonbury home has a washer/dryer, dishwasher, parking, and rooms with views of the surrounding forest.  Within walking distance there is a lake and hiking trails.  There is also plenty of good job opportunities in downtown Glastonbury and in Hartford which located within 15 miles from the house. The Property in Bellefonte PA is nine miles from Penn State University which has many intellectual and recreational opportunities. The property in Bellefonte is next to Spring Creek Recreation Area.

           After the two year period is up, give or take depending on each individuals situation, the group will have a significant amount saved and will be able to put it towards land and building materials.  We are currently looking for land in New England.  It is possible that we will already have the future land site already picked out as we have been actively looking however, so far nothing has yet has materialized.
